What's rolled inside a prayer wheel

Craft · 4 min read · 17 July 2026

Inside the drum of a prayer wheel is a tightly wound scroll printed with a mantra — most often Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ — repeated many times.

Winding and direction

The scroll is wound so the text reads upright and the wheel turns clockwise, the traditional direction. A well-made wheel is balanced so it spins smoothly and the scroll stays true.

Made, then checked

For our bespoke wheels the scroll is set before the drum is closed, then the finished piece is balanced, spin-tested, and filmed — so you can see it turn before it ships.
