Reading a thangka: symbols, not decoration

A thangka is a painted or embroidered scroll used for teaching and meditation. What looks decorative is usually precise: the posture, the hand gestures (mudras), the objects held, and even the colours are prescribed.

Where to start

Find the central figure first, then read outward. Gestures and attributes identify the deity; the surrounding scene places them in a lineage or story.

Why accuracy matters

Because these images are read, not just admired, small details are not interchangeable. We work to represent iconography correctly and welcome correction from practitioners and scholars.
