How a mala is actually used — 108, 54, 27

Practice · 4 min read · 19 June 2026

A mala is a counting tool for mantra. The most common form has 108 beads, with shorter strands of 54 or 27 for travel and wrist wear.

Holding and counting

Rest the mala on the fingers and move one bead per recitation with the thumb. At the larger guru bead you don’t cross over — you turn the mala around and continue back, so the guru bead is never counted.

Which count to choose

108 is traditional for a full round; 54 and 27 are practical for shorter sessions or for wearing. Choose by how you’ll actually use it, not only by tradition.

We describe traditional use only, never medical or miracle claims.
